Cast latex body parts, including chicken feet, a head, a foot, wings, and a heart, act as a visual lexicon of hope. Each of the animated body parts were first sculpted in clay and then cast in latex, before being suspended on invisible threads in front of the projected images. The projected images are tracings of the suspended sculptures “come to life” through film and digital animation, such that the process of making the work becomes the work itself. Unlike more common forms of digital animation, the work was all done by hand in a process more akin to traditional forms of shadow puppetry and drawing. Everything about the work is carefully designed to celebrate using the hand in artwork, from the initial molding and casting to the hand-drawn animations.
